What Is the India–EU FTA?

Nearly two decades in the making. Now reality.

Signed on 27 January 2026 at the 16th India–EU Summit in New Delhi, the India–EU Free Trade Agreement is a comprehensive agreement covering goods, services, investment, digital trade, intellectual property, and regulatory cooperation.

It makes the EU India's 22nd FTA partner and creates a free trade zone of 2 billion people representing nearly a quarter of global economic output — described by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen as creating "a free trade zone of 2 billion people, with both sides set to gain economically."

The EU Commission expects the deal to double EU goods exports to India by 2032. Indian exporters gain access to 99.5% of EU tariff lines at preferential or zero duty rates.

Rules of Origin

Who qualifies for preferential duties?

To benefit from FTA preferential tariff rates, goods must meet "rules of origin" — meaning they must be genuinely produced or substantially transformed in the exporting country. The FTA includes product-specific rules for each HS code chapter.

Buzars's legal partners assess your products' origin status, identify the correct HS codes, prepare Certificates of Origin, and file preferential duty claims on your behalf — ensuring you capture every saving the FTA makes available.

What is a Certificate of Origin?

A document certifying that goods were produced in the country claiming FTA benefits. Required by customs authorities to apply preferential tariff rates.

What if my product uses components from third countries?

Rules of origin allow for partial third-country content, provided sufficient processing occurred in the FTA country. Product-specific rules determine the threshold.

How long does duty preferential certification take?

With Buzars, typically 2–4 weeks to complete the full compliance setup — HS classification, origin documentation, and preferential claim filings.

Are services also covered?

Yes. The FTA includes extensive services commitments covering IT, finance, professional services, telecommunications, and more, alongside the goods chapters.
